Olympics cause snack food to soar


Sales of snacks have been soaring as Olympics audience stocks up on snack food at home so that they can enjoy watching their favourite events on TV, a Chinese newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The China Daily said sports fans are storing food to ensure they do not have to go out to eat while watching the Games in front of their TV sets.

As the Olympic fever grips city, Carrefour, the largest foreign retailer in China, has reported a significant increase of snacks and beer—especially imported beer—since the start of the Games in conjunction with a huge flow of foreign visitors, the newspaper said. The supermarket's Fangyuan branch in Beijing, for instance, has seen a nearly 16 percent growth in the past two weeks.

Moreover, online supermarkets have also gained popularity coinciding with the Olympics as many people prefer buying food from online stores to save more time to watch the Games.

Taobao.com, a popular online market, said intra-city transactions have risen by more than 20 percent.

Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou have been undergoing the most significant growth with various kinds of nuts and pastries topping the list, the report said.
